Later I asked that student why he had said so many nasty things about me. I struggled to understand that as I had done nothing bad to him. I showed him only kindness. Loosing that place in the hall of residence could have been a big problem for me and nonetheless I helped him without thinking. He had no ex- planation to his actions. We parted our ways after that. People often feel envious towards people who help them and respond to kindness with ingratitude. This story confirmed my view that one should be kind against all odds. There are a lot of bad examples in life but this is not the reason for becoming unkind. Lesson 4. To Help Or To Earn? The 1990s were remarkable. I remember those years because of extraordinary events in my life. At that time I had a tiny workshop in Banny side street in Moscow. I had neither facilities, nor furniture there. I slept on the floor on a pile of newspapers. Huge rats were prowling about fearlessly in search of food. On top of everything, I had hordes of cockroaches. I lived like that for quite some time. Seeing the conditions I lived in, my friends decided to pass round the hat to help me buy a flat. That was in 1996, one of the worst «perestroika» years in Russia. The collection was impressive – 34000 USD. When I was given the money, I was told not even to think about paying it back. Alexander Kovalkov, a man from Siberia, said in an uncompromising manner «You are an artist. I want to have a friend, not an enemy only because you cannot return the money». This is how I bought a flat in Balashiha. That was surreal for that time but people’s kindness had no boundaries. Ten years down the line, the building where my flat was got burnt down by people perpetrating illegal take- overs. 250 people were left without a roof over their heads. That time was not only the time of ultimate lawlessness and violence but also the time of absolute kindness. My friends, one of most prominent contemporaries of mine, asked the Moscow Government for help me. Although Moscow Government pro- vided a partially subsidised apartment, I still had to pay a million roubles. That was unthinkable money for me. Once my friend Sergei Pereverzev came to see me and he handed me an envelope. He said «Please do not borrow any money, this is an eternal serfdom.» When my first apartment burnt down, many people said «This is because you try to help everyone. People get what they deserve and you are stopping justice. Do not do kindness and you will not endure evil.» I had no answer to that. I am not sure there is one. And I still cannot remember Sergei’s unexpected help without tears. The 1990s were a hard time for everyone. It was hard for Sergei Pereverzev, Kovalkov and everyone who helped me to adapt to the new times and survive in the new reality. And yet they chose to help me not expecting anything in return. When you are helping someone, do not expect that the debts will be paid back. Everything comes back to the giving person manyfold often from random people. Giving is happiness. When you give or help do not count on people’s gratitude. Do not think that you will receive everything back. Circumstances can be different and the person you helped may not be in the position to return your help. Kindness is help. It is happiness to be in the position to express your friendship and kind attitude to people. If you take the principle of kindness as the principle stance in life, kindness is the solution to problems. If we expect or demand the debt to be repaid, we may have an enemy instead of a friend. Therefore you must be absolutely grateful to the person you helped. You need to value the opportunity to help. It is the giving person who needs to be grateful and then let life decide what the future brings. If you understand life from the position of kindness and gratitude, all kindness comes back sooner or later. I have been helping all my life without thinking that people should help me in return. If debts were repaid, I was thrilled because that gave me the opportu- nity to continue helping others. I helped many people and often received help from those people for whom I could not do anything. Helping is one of the most prominent features of humanity. Only helping others we are realising our human potential. It is important not to confuse help with making profit. Often we dissemble thinking «If I help now, it will come back to me with a profit». In this case it is not help, it is business. Lesson 5. Mantras of Kindness «The most powerful explanation of kindness is an example of a kind life.» L.N. Tolstoy Christianity is two thousand years old. Buddhism is five thousand years old. Wisdom of ancient religions lives for centuries and yet people are still asking what kindness is. Don’t they have God in their souls? Don’t they know prayers and have not they heard about Laozi? Have not they heard about L. Tolstoy,
