Г. Только через добро- dark very early in the North. Water was always dripping from the ceiling of the dugout. In spring it was melting snow and in summer it was torrential rains. We had to put buckets and jars around the room to collect the water. My mother would leave for work in a cowshed at 5 am and I stayed home alone all day. There was a manhole underneath the door. I would use it to go outside and come back in again. The only friend of mine at the time was a cat. It seemed huge to me. The cat had big green eyes. Sometimes the cat brought a mouse to me so I could play with it. If the mouse ran away, I screamed and the cat brought it back. Of course it was cruel towards the mouse but I did not know it then. At the same time, the deep understanding between the cat and myself was truly amazing. I would talk to the cat for hours and it felt that the cat responded. I think that when a child is born, they can hear the voice of the forest, understand the language of birds and animals and can even feel what is going on far away. They can move in space staying in the same place. The cat and I had one world between the two of us. It felt that the cat knew everything about me and I trusted it. I think my relationship with the cat was a manifestation of telepathy. Kindness connected us and made us one. I cannot tell if kindness makes telepathy possible or telepathy is a property of kindness but I can tell for sure that they are connected. These capabilities are fading away as we grow older. Maybe it happens to pro- tect us from our own powers. The capacity of the brain is unlimited but this might can be turned against us since humans are still animals underneath a very thin layer of civility. Once my teacher told us that only five percent of human brain is working. It was a surprising discovery. Later on in life I became convinced that kindness was the very key to the full potential of the brain. A kind person’s capability becomes di- vine. It is not a coincidence that many saints were healers, seers and could even change the reality around them. My childhood in the GULAG had a detrimen- tal effect on my health. I spent long periods of time in hospitals between the age of 4 and 12. I went through many operations and was bedridden for several years in a row. In those times I had nothing else to do but think. When I learnt about A.S. Pushkin at school, I was impressed by his understanding that «genius and evil are two things incompatible.» It is a common misconception that evil can be genius. Evil destroys everything. Genius is creative. Kindness creates. Only kindness can be genius and there is a lot of proof to this. In the IV century AD, a poor man had three daughters. He could not marry them off as he could not give them any dowry. He thought about selling them as slaves. That was the reality of the time. The girls were sobbing loudly. A lo- cal priest was passing the house at the time. He heard the crying, understood what was going on and left some money at the doorstep. The father was thrilled when he discovered that unexpected present because that allowed him to get his daughters married. That amazed locals so much that the priest was regarded as a saint. His name was Nicholas. His deed was one of the first acts of kindness at the time. His contemporaries could see that being kind was the same as being saint. Those days the position of a woman in society was roughly equal to an animal. At times they were treated even worse than a horse or a cow. Cattle was more useful. Nowadays we cannot even imagine that such savagery was a norm. Here is another parable. St. George is one of the most worshipped saints in Christianity. Once I was told an alternative story about his feat. Once upon a time one town was besieged. A monstrous dragon imposed a tax on its citizens. It expected to have a baby and a beautiful woman for breakfast. Town dwellers were frantic with grief. They went to St. George for help. He listened to people and agreed to help. Next morning he put a white shirt on, payed and went to the dragon’s cave. As he approached the cave, the dragon came out and spat fire. St. George asked the dragon quietly «Dear dragon, please come along with me». George took the dragon far away in the mountains and the citizens of the town did not see the dragon since. All of the early Christian icons featured St. George leading the dragon on a thin rope like a dog. Over the centuries, the faith was becoming weaker and the thin rope was getting thicker. When faith was no longer there, the rope became a spear. In contemporary icons, St. George is pictured killing the dragon with a spear. Why is that if there was no fight and no one was killed? Can evil be fought against with violence? It is a mistake to think that kindness must have big fists. Kindness is defending itself by love and creation. Kindness is life itself. No matter what is trying to destroy it, it will be spread like Dandelion seeds and appear again. It will always be the case. The time will come when the whole of the Earth will be covered with yellow flowers of kindness and shine more brightly than the Sun. That will be the light of kindness. Lesson 2 Be Thankful A few years ago I was naïve enough to hope that if I installed a monument of St. Nicholas in Washington, the split orthodox Christian churches would
